As you navigate the home buying process, I want to bring to your attention a serious issue affecting real estate transactions: wire fraud.
Scammers are increasingly targeting homebuyers by intercepting email communications and sending fraudulent wiring instructions. These emails often appear to come from trusted sources like your real estate agent, attorney, or title company.
If you follow these fake instructions, your funds could be transferred to a scammer’s account, resulting in significant financial loss.
To protect yourself:
- Always verify wiring instructions: Before sending any funds, call your real estate agent or title company using a known, trusted phone number to confirm the details. Do not use contact information provided in an email without verification.
- Be cautious of last-minute changes: Legitimate parties rarely change wiring instructions at the last minute. If you receive such a notice, treat it as a red flag and verify immediately.
- Avoid sending sensitive information via email: Email accounts can be compromised. It’s safer to discuss sensitive information over the phone or in person.
- Be alert to urgency and pressure tactics: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to prompt quick action. Take your time to verify all information before proceeding.
